There is a moment, near the end of The Final Sequence, when the film simply stops. The screen is black. The sound design — already minimal — disappears. For nearly thirty seconds, an audience is asked to sit in absence.
It is the boldest piece of editing in any film I have seen this year.
Moretti has always been a director of restraint, but here that restraint becomes a thesis. The Final Sequence is a film about the things memory chooses to leave out.
